Magic Lessons #46 – Elephants Never Forget Trick
The ‘Elephants Never Forget Trick’ is one of the easiest mentalism tricks out there. Some magicians fall into the trap of believing that a magic trick that is easy to learn and perform will not have a strong effect on the audience, when in most situations, this is simply not the case.
There is a strange phenomenon that seems to be brewing in the magic world. Because there are so many technical moves and sleights that can be learned, and many of these take time to master, magicians usually equate hard = good. Again, this is not always the case.
Simple Can Sometimes Be Better:
Never forget that ‘simple’ can produce stunning results too. It doesn’t get as simple as a pad and pen. That’s all that is required for this mentalism trick. The magic elephant is added to the magic trick to give you a way of keeping the audience captivated while the pad is doing the rounds.
This problem is seen in many mind reading type routines. It’s always up to you as the magician to ensure the audience can remain entertained throughout the set up phase of a performance such as the ‘Elephants Never Forget Trick’, that’s when the notepad is being passed around for the audience member to write their numbers down.
This routine will work fine without the elephant if you don’t want to include it, but it definitely aids in keeping the audience entertained for the duration of the magic trick.
When the total has been added up and read out by the audience, put your notepad away before revealing the prediction envelope. This stops people asking to look at the pad after the big reveal. If they ask, simply tear the sheet that was totaled up to hand out. If you retain control over your audience, you should never have to do this. Be sure to have a magic trick ready to go straight after this easy mentalism magic trick so you don’t leave your audience wondering about the notepad.
NOTE: I forgot to mention in the video that you should ask your audience to choose a 3 digit number under 500 otherwise the total I used of 879 won’t make sense if one of the numbers chosen was, say, 990. If you want to make it a free choice, with no restrictions, then simply make your prediction number something like 1437.
