Magic Lessons #12 – Food Magic Trick

Magic Lessons #12 – Food Magic Trick

Orange - Food Magic Trick - Magic Lessons #12 - Magic Tricks For KidsWhat’s one of the best reasons to do a food magic trick?

You can eat the magic trick when you are finished!

Another reason is; it makes for good impromptu magic like we used in Magic Lessons #4 – Halloween Magic Trick.

The secret you will learn in this magic lesson is not as important as the performance tip you will learn. The secret to this is so simple that nobody even thinks you would do it. I love these sort of magic trick secrets because they are so deliciously deceptive.

Watch the video for the performance and the secret.

Read on for the REAL magic lesson.

Canadian magician Bill Abbott has a lot of great routines that are audience tested to see if they work in the real world and will work for professional magicians who need magic tricks that will get them paid.

One great tip I learnt from him is about showing a bag empty.

We already discussed this in Magic Lessons #1 –  Paper Bag Trick. Here you will learn another way to show a bag or a container empty.

Magic Can Sometimes Smell Bad…

First up, for this food magic trick, you need the paper bag you use needs to be a recycled paper bag. By this I mean it has to be crumpled up and look like it has been used a few times to take your lunch to work or school. Doing this motivates this next bit that lets you show the paper bag empty without having to SAY, “look, the paper bag is EMPTY … nothing in it … it’s just a regular bag.”

Why is it bad to say this?

Think about it.

Would you ever ask say those words in anything but a magic trick? Of course you wouldn’t. It is exactly because of this that it arouses suspicion.

Here’s a more natural way.

You open your scrunched up paper bag and take a quick sniff and comment, “What does that smell like? Tuna? Onions?” You direct the opening of the bag to the audience members face so they can take a sniff. This way they are looking into the paper bag, seeing it empty, without you having to even mention the paper bag is empty.

This is good magic.

What if people want to look in the paper bag after the magic trick is over? Simple. Use this magic trick as an opening trick or a middle trick. Have another magic trick ready that will follow it straight away. This way when you are finished doing this effect, you simply scrunch up the bag like it is a used piece of rubbish that is of no use to anyone anymore. Always finish with a magic trick that can be examined. We will be talking about those in future magic lessons here at Magic Tricks For Kids.
