Magic Lessons #52 – Mystery of the Missing Sock

Dye Tube DemonstrationPractical magic are the tricks you would perform if magic wasn’t simply an illusion. Your magic powers would be used to simplify the things go on in your day to day life.

The concept of the “Mystery of the Missing Sock” trick appeared when I wondered how finding out where all the missing socks go would benefit the world a lot, though it is not top of my magic to-do list. Everyone has seemed to experience that moment of loss when you finish a load of washing and you have somehow lost one of your socks. I’m certain that everyone has those lonely socks in their drawer that don’t have their partner. This is my attempt to help solve this problem with magic.

Solving a Relatable Problem:

Because the premise of the Mystery of the Missing Sock magic trick is so relatable, you will have the audience on board immediately and they will be paying attention to how you will find a solution to the problem. Using the ‘dye tube’ principle we are going to pretend to solve this issue. This magical apparatus is commonly found in silk magic where it Missing Sock Revealis used to transform one coloured silk into a whole new colour. There are multiple shapes and designs. Principally, it’s a cylindrical shaped tube that sticks to your finger and you can manipulate it to be hidden by the movements that your hand naturally makes.

Get Creative:

The “Mystery of the Missing Sock” magic trick makes it easy to hide the homemade tube by providing a piece of paper that you can hide a very small elephant behind (that may be an overstatement, but you get the idea).

The tube can be assembled from items such as a cardboard box, a paper towel roll or a toilet paper roll. The materials shouldn’t be overly expensive and use whatever works and is easiest for you. There are plenty of house hold materials that can be used to make the tube, so get creative.

You can get creative with what comes out of the tube. Just make sure it fits into the tube properly and the possibilities are endless.

Thank you Julian. I have an old tan sock I was about to retire that looks a little like the sock in your PDF, so I hope to give this a try.
