Magic Lessons #57 – Nut and Bolt Trick
The Nut and Bolt Trick teaches you how to do a move called the Bobo switch, a move commonly seen practiced with coins. The shape of the bolt makes it easier to do with coins rather than bolts as the threaded section becomes a handle that is easier to grab than a coin.
This magic trick has so much going for it. For me, it seems like a nut and bolt is intrinsically funnier than a coin, I can’t really explain why I think this way. It’s similar to how some words just sound funnier than other words. For example Banana is a funnier word than apple. Taking some industrial hardware from your pocket when it is not expected may catch some people off guard.
The Nut and Bolt Trick is perfect for strolling magic as it is angle proof, wind proof and simple to perform.
Doc Eason’s Version:
If you can master the Bobo switch, I recommend you learn a routine named ‘All Screwed Up’ by Doc Eason. The routine uses the same routine seen in this tutorial but it has a series of moves added before and after it that are also very valuable.
Bar Magic Specialist:
Doc Eason specializes in bar magic. He is a professional bartender and he entertains his customers at the bar with magic tricks. This is a specialist form of magic and I believe that Doc is easily one of the best at it.
He has a video series on bar magic that I recommend you seek out. Not only is it great for finding mind blowing tricks, it is a masterclass on audience management and the art of misdirection.
The nut and bolt trick is easy to learn if you have the nut on hand in your hand and you practice while you are doing mundane activities. That’s how I learnt how to do it.

I presume this is a ‘Typo’????
“The shape of the bolt makes it easier to do with coins rather than bolts”???
Thank you Julian for the ‘Nut & Bolt’ lesson, and the link to Doc. Eason.
That is a really great effect.
I will get practicing, and perform this trick to my fellow magicians… LoL…
Dynamike…
Julian- thanks. You might have said something about avoiding having the bolts ‘talk’ to each other, i.e. avoiding clinking them. Second comment: It is ok, but am not thrilled about dropping the nuts into the lap openly as you do it. It forces you to be throwing non-existent nuts that the audience knows are not there, because they just saw you drop them into your lap.
Hi Julian!
I really enjoy your magic tricks and have a lot of them saved but for some reason the video on this one just does not come up. I can hear you just fine, the audio is greaat but all I get for video is a black screen.
I love the fact that you are teaching the Bo Bo switch and acknowledging him for it. We live in Arkansas and this is just a cool way of showing my son that someone from here can have a big influence in magic if he really works at it. I’ve performed in a school in recent years where the teachers still remember Bo Bo from when they were kids.
Hi Julian
I’m new to magic and this video, along with you pointing me to Doc Eason, has made this one of my go-to tricks I have in my pocket nearly all the time. I was doing it for kids at church this morning and they thought they had it figured out until I produced the bolt. Then it was “Whoa! How did you do that?”
Best of all, I recently visited the refugee camp in Lesvos, Greece with nuts and bolts in my pocket. The kids there loved it!
Keep up the great work!
