Magic Lessons #11 – Water Magic Trick
Sometimes the simplest of things can make the best tricks. This water magic trick is so ridiculously easy to do that you would be hard pressed to give it the official title of a ‘magic trick’. Don’t under estimate though the impact this magic trick has on audiences.
I have never used this in a show. I use it often in informal settings. Often I might be booked to do a show at someone’s house and I get there and there is a delay in getting the show started. If I am not rushing and I can delay starting for a while, magic tricks like this are great to break the awkwardness.
I ask for a plastic bag and some pens or sharp pencils. It is a great game to play while everyone is waiting.
Always remember:
PEOPLE LOVE PLAYING GAMES MORE THAN THEY LIKE WATCHING MAGIC TRICKS.
This is a sad realization for many magicians but it is true. This is not to say that people don’t like magic tricks. They do! What playing game offers that many magic tricks don’t is the chance to become involved.
This water magic trick really gets people involved. It has enough of a ‘dare’ factor about it to be intriguing and engaging but the consequences if it goes wrong is minimal: you get a little wet with some magic water.
Have some added fun with this by building audience involvement. Get everyone else to count aloud to three as you ready yourself to plunge the pencils in. When you count, “1..2…. wait a minute … I need to get a cloth in case this doesn’t work.” So build up the tension a few times and you will get a lot of value from this.
I really love this easy water magic trick because it takes little effort to put together but it gets better reactions then some more detailed magic tricks.
